Can a cracked windscreen be against the law?
The problem with having a cracked windscreen is that, unless visibility is reduced considerably, the temptation may be to delay a repair or replacement until a later date. However, driving with a cracked windscreen may mean you are committing a motoring offence and, even if this isn’t the case, you are limiting your visibility and by doing this will be putting you and your passengers at risk. If you’re driving with a cracked windscreen and you have an accident, you could be charged with a more serious driving offence. The accident could be your responsibility because you were driving with a damaged windscreen.
Can a cracked or chipped windscreen fail an MOT?
If you have incurred a chip or crack to your vehicle’s windscreen, then yes, this can fail your vehicles next MOT. If the damage to the screen is above 40mm anywhere on your windscreen then this will fail your MOT, you will need to have this repaired or even replaced before your next MOT, even if you have a chip or crack around 10mm in certain zones this may also fail the MOT.
